Jan 24, 2019 at 11:09 comment added Баян Купи-ка i'm not sure the distinction based on countability is correct, and 10 человек народу is akin to 200 грамм сахару where both народ и сахар represent a certain conceptual whole from which a part is taken away, 100 тысяч войск is plainly ungrammatical, infantile and not an accurate equivalent due the use of войско in plural, but i can imagine 100 тысяч войску where войско denotes a certain whole
Jan 24, 2019 at 8:05 comment added Alex_ander @Elena It's just an official prescription to only use народа in formal cases and to use народу as 'colloquial'. The 'ruscorpora' has the opposite statistics for printed sources (964:394 in favour of много народу). It actually works much like толку or чайку.
Jan 24, 2019 at 8:04 comment added Elena @БаянКупи-ка, 10 человек народу is just like 100 тысяч войск. It is a colloquialism we've got used to, but not a literature norm.
Jan 24, 2019 at 8:01 comment added Баян Купи-ка 10 человек народу sounds right to me, same for воздух - мне не хватает воздуху occurs admittedly not awful lot, but it exists
Jan 24, 2019 at 5:33 comment added Elena @БаянКупи-ка, it is allright for the colloquial speech, but народ is uncountable, that's why it suits an exclamation better than a question. In either Genitive.
Jan 24, 2019 at 1:36 comment added xris Thanks for this answer. The difficulty from learners, is that textbooks present the partitive genitive only briefly. It helped to have some historical background, to learn about 'register', and to get reassurance that the choice doesn't really matter!
Jan 23, 2019 at 22:07 comment added Баян Купи-ка you mean it's incorrect to ask for example Сколько народУ сегодня было на спектакле?
